Pema T'sal Schools

Pema Ts'al schools are unique facilities, which serve as homes for the children and educational centers where they receive help with their homework from the local schools, and educational institutions where classes are taught. They are located within the Tibetan refugee community of Mundgod in South India and in Pokhara, Nepal.

In communities where most families have little education, children often find little support for their academic efforts. Semi-literate parents cannot help with homework and sometimes do not understand why studying is so important. All of the Pema Ts'al resident students attend the local community school where they study Tibetan, Hindi, English, math, science, history and social studies, along with about 1,000 other students. The objectives of the centers are:

To provide free education and complete care for the Tibetan children of the most destitute families.
To create a model for the community, where education is highly valued by providing a better opportunity for learning through discipline, dedication and hard work.
To inspire an awakening among the community to preserve its cultural identity and ethical values in this changing world.
To awaken a consciousness in the heart of the students so they will be a responsible part of the larger community and uplift all humanity through prayers and blessings.
To establish this institution in all fields of study as a future University.
The schools have developed a reputation for academic excellence. Pema's students have received first place in national awards. Students have graduated and gone on to college where they continue to pursue their dreams.

The children live at the school where they receive three meals a day and attention toward their studies, which is not always possible in the refugee community.

Sponsorships for Pema Ts'al Mundgod students continue through college. The students not only have to pay tuition to gain admittance, they must also pay for books, lodging and general expenses, which is more costly than when they attend Pema Ts'al. Pema Ts'al continues to send them a stipend as long as they remain in college.
